  1. Hi Michelle--
I just thought of a way you could have a live feed of all the news articles that discuss this story. Interested? hit me up....

  2. Oh dear - do Fox News *really* consider this mural obscene and erotic?

    I am truely baffled!

  3. I am an Evangelical Christian, and my wife and I took this painting as social commentary on our narcissistic culture. That is, were she living in this day and age, even the Virgin Mary might be obsessed with looking fat, even though the halo was reflecting the very Glory of God on her countenance. We were not offended, but rather thought the piece made a good point, in a way that only art can make it. We never noticed the Egyptian references at all until they were pointed out (what is Egyptian makeup?), and it appears our interpretation was different from what the artist may have intended, but that's what happens in this medium.

  4. Anonymous,

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and insightful comments! This is exactly the sort of thing I hoped people would be asking and discussing. A friend of mine made a similar comment-- how even as the perfect woman, she is being held to a ridiculous modern standard of beauty. I think it's amazing how this one question ("Does this halo make my face look fat?") is a portal to many more questions that may not have an answer. Is the caption what she is thinking, or what our modern society imagines that she, as the perfect woman, would be thinking?

As for the "Egyptian makeup"-- ah, I see now I was not clear! She is wearing the iconic "Eye of Horus"; though it is difficult to see in these small images on the screen. On the 4 x 8' mural, I believe it is more obvious.

I love all the different viewpoints people are bringing up-- even those who are offended have offered some fascinating commentary. I think that, just as when we hear a song and a flood of memories and emotions comes to us that have nothing to do with the songwriter's experience, so it is with a painting.

    Thanks again!

    Michelle
